Tongli is known for it’s quaint canals and time transporting qualities. Life moves a little slower, the houses along the water are old, and the people hang out around the markets.
We made the mistake of overlooking the cost of visiting this place and were insulted when we got racially profiled and barked at to pay an absurd amount to walk through the “Old Town.” We had to settle with looking across the water and enjoying the narrow alleys available to us. Overall, it was a disappoining and slightly humiliating experience because the ticket sellers were laughing at us and we simply couldn’t justiy spending money here.
What We Learned
1. Leave it to the Chinese to charge $12 to walk in a little village.
2. Don’t try to find another way in . . . We tried.
3. When leaving the bus station, turn left not right if you want to find the “Ok
4. The Sex Museum is in “Old Town” so if you aren’t prepared to pay the toll to enter that area ... You can’t see it.
5. When walking in a dirty town costs more than my budget allows, the ticket system is racially enforced, and the locals laugh and yell at me, it puts me in a bad mood, we leave 3 hours earlier than we intended and don’t spend a goddamn dollar.
6. Human waste goes straight into the canals.
