Siquijor
Philippines
Philippines

We came to Siquijor three years ago on the recommendation of a friend who knew we were looking for the ultimate in relaxation. That’s exactly what we found here. This time around, we were looking for the same thing after the battle that was “China.”  We flew into Manila without a plan and decided on a quick flight to Cebu so we could eventually put ourselves on the beach in Siquijor.

This island reminds us of the TV drama “Lost” when you approach it by boat. Our favorite retreat is a resort called “Coral Cay.” The family and employees remembered us when we walked in and I could feel layers of stress melt off my soul when I took my first plunge into the water. The food was great, the parties were a blast, the company was fantastic. This remains one of our favorite places in the world and it’s always hard to leave.

What We Learned

- Siquijor has a “vibe” that might not be in line with it’s “Black Magic” tradition, but does exude a remote stillness and beauty that we haven’t found anywhere else.

- Try to join some local parties if given the opportunity. There is a lot of talent on the island and each of the three we’ve been to have an intimate feel to them, like everyone knows and likes each other.

- Rent a motorcycle and explore the island, especially the waterfalls. Very romantic spot.

- Be wary of the sea urchins. - “Ouch!” Calamanse (locally-grown mini-lemon/limes) juice can help dissolve the proteins in the urchins barbs.

- Take the Delta ferry insead of the slower, less expensive transport boat which made us feel seasick.

- Come ready to relax.

- Stay at Coral Cay and say “Hello” to Dave (owner), Helen (wife) and Jonas (son) for us.  http://www.coralcayresort.com/
